ESPN
dropped Hank Williams Jr. from opening Monday Night Football last night
after the singer made controversial comments about President Obama.
Williams, known for his “are you ready for some football?” lead-in to
Monday Night Football, went on “Fox & Friends” yesterday morning and
criticized Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner for playing a
round of golf together, saying, “That’s like Hitler playing golf with
(Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu.” When asked to explain his analogy,
Williams said Obama and Vice-President Biden are “the enemy.” ESPN
said, “While Hank Williams Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize he
is closely linked to our company through the opening to Monday Night
Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a
result have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.” Bocephus
responded by releasing a statement saying he was simply “misunderstood”
when he compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler. “Some of us have strong
opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme – but it
was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed
to me – how ludicrous that pairing was,” Hank said. “They’re polar
opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never
will. I have always respected the office of the president.”
